Green Teas
Green tea has been around for over 4000 years and historically, has been used in medicinal practices to treat the Chinese for certain illnesses. It also lends itself as an aid in the prevention of rheumatoid arthritis or to reduce the symptoms in individuals already suffering from the disease. In women who drink green tea and have a history of breast cancer, studies have shown there are fewer recurrances of breast cancer and the disease has spread less quickly due to the tea inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. The secret of green tea is the tea leaves are steamed, not fermented, thereby leaving the EGCG compound intact. Research has also been done indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol. One last point to bring to the table, green tea has also been shown to aid in the prevention of tooth decay. In speaking with the different experts and reading information on the benefits of green tea, the answer to the most important question (how much) was consistently 4-6 cups per day. Each 3.5 oz bag makes approximately 50 cups of tea.
